1. Use re-usable and washable plastic containers (Tupperware or Pyrex) instead of disposable plastic bags to store food and pack lunches.
2. Use re-usable cloth grocery bags and decline plastic bags at your local grocery store checkout
3. Use self-checkout to reduce bag usage, and decline bags when you can carry your grocery items in your hands

For the plastic bags you already have collected, here’s ways to use them instead of trashing them:

1. Use your plastic bags to pick up animal (dog) poop
2. Donate the plastic bags to animal shelters or dog parks
3. Use them in place of paper when doing work around the house such as painting
4. Keep some in your car in case of emergencies
5. Use them to collect trash when you’re camping – and take the trash with you
6. Use them in keeping valuable items
7. Return them to your local grocery store – they can be re-used and sometimes recycled

But plastic bags don’t biodegrade and are made with harmful chemicals. And while reusable cloth shopping bags are growing in popularity, they are more costly to consumers and aren’t always the easiest solution. Because of this, many consumers find papers bags a good alternative if they don’t have reusable bags.

Paper bags are made from felled trees, which some proponents of plastic bags suggest creates more of an imprint on the environment than plastic bags. If we happen to lapse on taking our reusable totes to the store, which isn't very often anymore thanks to this post, we ask the cashier to pack our groceries in paper bags. Even though there's still a debate on which is greener, we find that we're more able to reuse the strong paper bags than their plastic counterparts at home, in oh-so-many ways...

Here are some of tips to reuse paper bags. Share your thoughts too!

1. Collect paper recycling in it, and recycle the whole package 
2. Use it as gift wrap
3. Make gift tags
4. Ready a spot of land for a garden by cutting the bags, flattening them, and covering them with compost (it kills weeds and prevents them from hindering your garden)
5. Collect kitchen scraps and other compost items; when it's time to compost, dump out the food scraps and then tear up the bag to go directly into the compost pile as well
6. Shred and add to the compost
